科幻冒险片：它讲述探险、旅行的冒险故事，主人公在其中历尽磨难，而观众则阅尽奇观。如《地心游记》（Journey to the Center of the Earth，1959），《2001太空漫游》（2001：A Space Odyssey，1968）和《侏罗纪公园》（Jurassic Park，1993）等。
科幻动作片：它往往喜爱表现一个英雄如何地身手不凡。比如《终结者》系列（The terminator），十分成功的《黑衣人》（Men in Black，1997）及其不太成功续集其实更像是警匪片，而根据英雄漫画改编的《超人》（Superman）、《蝙蝠侠》（Batman）和《蜘蛛人》系列（Spider-Man）等也可以划入这一个亚类。
科幻史诗片：它常常创造“由于科学技术的异化而导致的独裁的混乱的非理想社会”，未来成了一个“背景” ，而真正演出的是气势宏大的星际战争和纵横捭阖的宇宙政治。如《星球大战》系列（Star Wars）及其前传系列，还有《星际迷航》系列（Star Trek）。《黑客帝国》系列（The Matrix）则讲述了一个救世主通过自我牺牲而使机器和人重归于好的地下斗争的故事。
